Where did the Beating Hearts exhibit come from?

The Beating Hearts posters were created by two artists and domestic violence activists, Kate Sartor Hilburn and Terrie Queen Autrey, in Louisiana. The posters are based on their exhibit of photographic constructions and text, also entitled Beating Hearts. They powerfully reflect the experiences of domestic violence victims/survivors in their own words, and address such topics as “why does she stay?”, the roots of domestic violence, and commonly held myths about domestic violence.

The Virginia Sexual & Domestic Violence Action Alliance purchased a set of the Beating Hearts poster series in 2005 and created a display that groups may use statewide as a method of raising awareness about violence in intimate relationships.

How large is the exhibit?

The exhibit features 12 laminated posters (each 22” x 28”), displayed on a large (8 feet tall x 10 feet wide x 3 feet deep) lighted display. In order to exhibit the display, you will need a ceiling that is at least 9 feet high, and a room that is at least 11 x 12 feet. The carrying case for the display is 3½ feet tall, 1½ feet deep, 2 feet wide. The portfolio that protects the posters is 2 ½ feet x 3 ½ feet.

What do I need to know about setting up the exhibit?

You will need 2 people to set up the exhibit. The carrying case is very heavy--85lbs. Although it has wheels on it, it is difficult for one person to load and unload from a car. Because the display is so tall, you will need to stand on a small ladder (or at least a sturdy chair) in order to assemble it. The display is also lighted, so you will need access to an electrical outlet. A power strip and extension cord are included as part of the exhibit. If you have never assembled the display before, plan for it to take approximately 30 minutes from start to finish. Directions for set-up are provided in the carrying case.
